2022
August
Just loving the heat !!!
NEWS AND VIEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT
Some of you will know that we are hosting a family wedding in August – my daughter and her fiancé are getting married here in France, with a significant number of their family and friends attending the ceremony (travel issues and covid permitting ……) As you can imagine I am very busy so this message from me will be a shorter one than usual.
All membership renewals should now be made and we have received your suggestions for our annual donations to local charities. Our new Secretary-elect, Jackie Colgate, has begun preparing your AGM mailing which you will receive later in August.
Other dates for your diary:
Thursday 25 August – Les Marronniers, Lanquais – please join us for a light summer lunch at this popular restaurant, probably our last al fresco lunch this year. All details are on the website and the magazine.
Thursday 15 September – a reminder of our Gala lunch at the Salle des Châteaux at La Tour des Vents, Monbazillac. We would love a good turnout to celebrate DLCI’s 36th anniversary! You are encouraged to book online on the Members Only area of the website, but please get in touch with Isla if you have problems doing this.
Wednesday 28 September – AGM. This will take place at the Salle Jean Barthe in Bergerac and NOT the Orangerie.
Tuesday 11 October – the return of the Grand DLCI Quiz at the Salle des Fêtes in Creysse! Organised by members Pat and Basil Sansom and assisted by our newest committee member, Liz Davies, full information will be on the website from 21st August. In the meantime, please think about getting together your team of six or the Organisers can assist with making up a team of six from couples/individuals.
We wish a warm welcome to Liz, and I am grateful to all the Committee members for their continued support and hard work on your behalf.
Finally, please note that the magazine will be incorporated into our DLCI website from the 1st September and will appear on the 1st of every month as the magazine does now.
Enjoy the sunshine!
Kathy

WELCOME TO OUR NEW RECRUIT FOR THE COMMITTEE - LIZ DAVIES
I took early retirement and moved to France 12 years ago. Having explored many parts of the country, the Dordogne was always my favourite area. In my previous life, I qualified as a nurse in the 1970s and specialized in operating theatre work. I then moved into Reproductive Healthcare and spent the last 25 years of my working life with Marie Stopes International.
As much as I loved my career, I confess to enjoying retirement even more, There is something very liberating about not having your social life confined to weekends. I enjoy many activities here, including being part of a quiz team, a book club and now DLCI; I actually joined three years ago, but of course Covid intervened and prevented many activities. I also assist in organizing, and participating in, events for various animal charities in the area
I was very pleased to be invited on to the DLCI committee and hope to be able to make a valuable contribution in the future

JULY’S EVENTS
Lunch at La Closerie de la Beyne on 15th July
Review by
Maggie Fitzgerald
On a glorious, sunny day a number of us were able to enjoy a delightful lunch at La Closerie de la Beyne. We ate on a lovely, shaded terrace with a view of a swimming pool, which made some of us wish we had come with a swimming costume. As always at La Closerie the meal was delicious and perfect for the hot weather.
A joy of these lunches is meeting new people and swapping cooking and gardening tips as well as ‘life tips’ and sharing our enjoyment of life in France. However, if we thought that we were a world away from the trials and tribulations of world events, our speaker gave us a different perspective with a talk about her life and work with the National Organisation for Women in the USA and activism in the cause of women’s rights. Nancy Dawson gave an interesting and thought provoking talk which also covered the current state of women’s rights, most especially in the USA given recent Supreme Court decisions. She patiently answered questions and sparked some lively discussions. We were particularly grateful that Nancy was able to conclude on a note of optimism for the future.
DLCI / DOGS ANNIVERSARY GALA LUNCH
will be held at
Salle des Chateaux at the Tour des Vents Monbazillac
on Thursday 15th September 2022 at 12 noon
under the direction of
Michelin starred chef Damien Fagette
who will be in charge of our lunch on the day
The above event has been organised to mark the 36th and 35th anniversaries respectively of our organisations, both of which were founded by Jennifer de Chabaneix, whose original vision was to bring together women who had relocated to this area of France to offer them friendship and support. As is the case today, this was achieved through the creation of an interesting and varied social programme, including lively monthly lunches held in a variety of different restaurants. Most of the activities we undertake are regarded as fundraising opportunities and we continue to support three different charities annually. Our colleagues in DOGS run their association slightly differently, and this purportedly came into being because the ladies of the household were off to attend DLCI events, leaving the menfolk at home, perhaps feeling they were missing out!
We are delighted to be able to invite you to attend the above anniversary Gala lunch to help us to celebrate this milestone (which has been on hold because of the pandemic) and which will help us to forge closer links with our colleagues in DOGS.
The cost of the lunch will be 37€ per person and payment should be with us by 31st August at the latest as the restaurant will be paid for the booking in advance.
We would encourage members to pay by online direct bank transfer to the DLCI using your name and Sept Gala as the reference.
When completing the bank transfer online, please remember we are now with BNP Paribas and NOT La Banque Postale,
If you feel more comfortable paying by cheque, please contact Isla for further details at DLCISecretary@gmail.com
In order to make a reservation, please go to the website : https://dlci.weebly.com/dlci-and-dogs-anniversary-gala-lunch.html
Your booking will be received and automatically confirmed.
If you need assistance, please email ISLA at DLCISecretary@gmail.com

DORDOGNE LADIES BOOK CLUB
This month’s excerpt is from
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
Chosen by Dawn Kidd
“I am glad it cannot happen twice, the fever of first love. For it is a fever, and a burden, too, whatever the poets may say. They are not brave, the days when we are twenty-one. They are full of little cowardices, little fears without foundation, and one is so easily bruised, so swiftly wounded, one falls to the first barbed word. To-day, wrapped in the complacent armour of approaching middle age, the infinitesimal pricks of day by day brush one but lightly and are soon forgotten, but then--how a careless word would linger, becoming a fiery stigma, and how a look, a glance over a shoulder, branded themselves as things eternal. A denial heralded the thrice crowing of a cock, and an insincerity was like the kiss of Judas. The adult mind can lie with untroubled conscience and a gay composure, but in those days even a small deception scoured the tongue, lashing one against the stake itself.”

Dickie and Dottie
The two newest members of the household
Kittens were going to be Su and Duko - that didn’t work - so we both sat and had a think - quite unproductive - probably due to red wine.
My husband said - have to be
Dick and Liddie - a Yorkshire thing
I said remember we have to give the vet the names - so we thought Dickie and Dottie then.
My parents were Richard and Dorothy - Dick and Dot to all friends and family
