DLCI 2023 Magazines - April

Alix Sundquist’s garden - Spring is finally here!

NEWS AND VIEWS FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello everyone,

From everything I see on Facebook and from talking to friends I know everyone has been beavering away in their gardens and I must admit they’re looking spectacular. We are so lucky here in France to have a more temperate climate and live the outdoor life!

With that in mind, and knowing event season is rapidly approaching, I would like to remind members that they can advertise events they are participating in eg recitals, festivals, art exhibitions, plays etc. either by sending the information to me, for inclusion in the magazine, or by putting it on our Facebook page (one advert per event and excluding businesses.) Several members have said how useful ‘Event Sharing’ would be and we think it would be a wonderful idea.

We are also asking for charity nominations Adult, Child and Animal – please note the charity must be known to members and operate (have their HQ) in their locality. All information is available here.

Following our last committee meeting we are close to finalising the years events. If anyone knows of a speaker they think would be of interest to members at a lunch please let me or one of the committee know. We also know many of you have led rich and varied lives and we’d love to hear from you too!

With regard to the committee, please let us know if you would like to join us – you would be made very welcome and an extra pair of hands will prove invaluable.

One of our charity winners N.E.D (Nos Enfants Différent) are holding an event over the Easter weekend and have asked us to share the information fare and wide – we are delighted to do so!

The invitation from Vincent and Angélique Delage reads:

Hello everyone ,

Since 2018, the NED association (Our different children) has been organising events for International Autism Awareness Day.

Attached are two programs with all the details.

Please share the information with your neighbours, colleagues, friends and even enemies (if views and prejudices are to be changed).

Laurent Savard will give his gesticulated, funny and truthful lecture and will sign his book after the performance.

It's open to all so we hope to see many of you there.

Finally I have included the Hollie app (it is very easy to download) – please read about it and send it to anyone you think may benefit. It is highly regarded and is another tool to keep those we love and care for a little safer.

HAPPY EASTER!

Take care everyone

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Perfect for Easter

SALMON WITH A CHAMPAGNE SAUCE

by James Martin

NB It works better if you have a lattice cutter for the pastry!

Ingredients

2 x 200g salmon fillets

2 strips puff pastry

1 egg yolk for egg wash

50g butter

50ml champagne/ sparkling wine

200ml fish stock

200ml double cream (or French equivalent or a visit to Grand Frais)

Knob of butter ( has to be it’s James Martin!)

Chervil to garnish

Asparagus

Method

Pre heat the oven to 200c

Trim the base of the asparagus and cut down to size. Place the salmon on top of the asparagus

Wrap the lattice of puff pastry (use a roller to make this) around the salmon, egg wash then pop onto a baking tray, bake for 15 minutes and then rest it for 5 mins.

In a small pan with the tops of the asparagus, add the fish stock, bring to the boil and reduce by half. Add the champagne, cream and finish with a knob of butter. Cook for 2/3 minutes.

To serve, pop the salmon into the centre of the plate, top with the sauce and garnish with chervil.

Enjoy!

DORDOGNE LADIES BOOK CLUB

Excerpt sent in by Dawn Kidd

This month the Bergerac Book club group is reading THE TENANT OF WILDFELL by HALL, by ANN BRONTE. Whilst reading, which for me usually occurs under the covers with the Kindle at about 2am, I came across this piece and wondered if anyone else has an Arthur in their lives…..

“Arthur is getting tired – not of me, I trust, but of the idle, quite life that he leads – and no wonder, for he has so few sources of amusement: he never reads anything but newspapers and sporting magazines: and when he sees me occupied with a book, he won’t let me alone till I close it. In fine weather he generally manages to get through the time pretty well, but on rainy days, of which we have had a good many of late, it is painful to witness his ennui. I do all I can to amuse him, but it is impossible to get him to feel interested in what I most like to talk about while on the other hand. He likes to talk about things that cannot interest me- or even that annoy me – and these please him- the most of all: for his favourite amusement of all is to sit or loll beside me on the sofa, and tell me stories…”

For details on the three DLCI Book Clubs please go to the Book Club section on the Members Area Homepage

We will encourage and give all possible help to anyone wishing to start-up a new meeting group, with a few friends, in their area.

DLCI LUNCH ON BEHALF OF FÉMINITÉ SANS ABRI 24th March
Review by Liz Davis

As International Womens' Day takes place in March, we held the lunch on behalf of Féminité Sans Abris, a very worthy charity offering help to homeless and abused women. Nathalie, who runs the charity in the Bordeaux area attended and gave a very interesting talk on the origins of the charity and its aims and objectives. We had asked those attending to donate cosmetic and toiletry articles, and the response was overwhelming. The boot of Nathalie's car was filled to the brim and she was more than delighted with everyone's generosity.

Lunch at Buckets was a great success and the food was, as always, excellent.

Thank you all
