DLCI Member Of The Month - November 2024

Sandra van Tongerloo

Hello everyone, I’m Sandra, I’m a Dutch expat who traded Amsterdam’s canals for the charm of the French countryside, bringing with me an MA in Literature and a culinary passion that once revolved around sweet creations. My journey has been a flavorful one: I was a restaurateur in Amsterdam, an artisan ice cream maker in Bordeaux, and a gourmet chef in Dordogne, devoted to crafting indulgent food and patisserie. Today, I’m ‘repenting’ for those lavish years and have traded (mostly) all the sugary treats for brain-healthy foods. I know, the leap from ice cream to brain health might seem unexpected—ice cream was my sweet spot (pun intended), and each flavor I created was like crafting a story.

But six years of caring for my mother, who had Alzheimer’s, forced me to take a closer look at my own health. That chapter of caregiving ultimately changed my path. Earlier this year I created a new business: the Elisabeth Hendrix Method and named it after her, as to honor her. My focus these days? To help others avoid the devastating effects of cognitive decline that my mom and so many women of her generation had to face without the resources we have today.

Now, as a brain health coach, I empower women to make lifestyle shifts for cognitive vitality. And, of course, my chef’s heart hasn’t abandoned flavor! Cooking for Cognition is my new passion, where delicious and brainboosting meals take center stage. But let’s be clear: there’s no way I’m munching on celery sticks and bland tofu every day! I believe food should be bursting with flavor, and I’m passionate about teaching others how to elevate every bite to be as brain-boosting as it is delicious.

I’m also part of the DLCI since a couple of months. There’s something incredibly energizing about meeting with women from all over the world. It’s a club where each gathering feels like we’re fast-tracking friendships. There’s no need for the usual small talk; we jump right into meaningful conversations, fueled by a shared openness and curiosity about each other’s lives. I find it  endlessly enriching, especially because the experience brings me so much warmth and laughter.

I live in Périgueux with my teenage son, who’s determined to become a guitar hero (let’s say my ears are very seasoned), and our Jack Russell-Teckel mix, Speck, whom we rescued nine years ago. (Hi Phoenix Association!) Outside of my work, you’ll find me out walking in nature, exploring gardens and architecture, or hunting for vintage tableware treasures. My motto is “eat the rainbow,” and I like my plates to match those vibrant colors too!

Thank you for the warm welcome and for letting me share a bit of my life. I’m looking forward to getting to know each of you!
